An out-of-state domestic traveler with a confirmed case of measles passed through Union Station in the West Loop late last month, Chicago health authorities announced Thursday.
The stricken traveler was at Union Station in the 200 block of South Canal Street on Thursday, Aug. 27th after 8:00 p.m. through Friday, Aug. 28th, according to a statement from the Chicago Department of Public Health. CDPH didn’t provide a time for the traveler’s departure.
The exact date and time of exposure are unknown at this time. If more information becomes available, CDPH will update the exposure location posting on its website.
A second measles case was also confirmed in Kane County Thursday, weeks after the area’s first confirmed case, according to health officials.
The person was vaccinated against measles and in contact with the first case, which was first reported Aug. 24, according to the Kane County Health Department.
While a vaccination protects against measles, breakthrough cases, where a vaccinated person can get measles, still occur, health officials said. People who are vaccinated and develop measles are generally less likely to experience severe illness or complications and may be less likely to transmit the virus.
The first confirmed case in Kane County included two possible exposure locations:
- Kaneland High School in Maple Park on Aug. 18, during the school day.
- Next Generation Pediatric Clinic in South Elgin on Aug, 21, between 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
As of Thursday, there were 11 reported measles cases in the state, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
