Pace to buy 36 hybrid buses with federal grant

Suburban bus service Pace says it will buy 36 hybrid buses after receiving a $39 million federal grant.

The grant from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low-or-No Emissions program will fund buses for the Pace’s West Division in Melrose Park, Pace said in a statement Monday.

The announcement comes almost a week after the Chicago Transit Authority said it would buy up to 150 hybrid buses with $121 million is was awarded from the same federal program.

Last year, Pace was awarded a $30.9 million grant awarded by the FTA to buy 33 hybrid buses for its fleet, the first of which were delivered last month.

In its statement, Pace said the grants help the agency retire aging diesel-only buses. Pace has set a goal to electrify its entire bus fleet by 2024.
