Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo on mass JPL layoffs

By Mayor Victor Gordo, Guest columnist

As mayor of Pasadena, my heart goes out to our neighbors at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who this week announced hundreds of layoffs at NASA’s research and development center as part of efforts to create a “leaner infrastructure” and reduce costs amid financial challenges.

In nearly every ceremonial speech I give, whether here at home or abroad, I make a point to remind people that Pasadena is the “Center of the Universe.” I talk about the incredible institutions that call our city home, known and respected around the world. JPL is always at the top of that list. Its scientists, engineers and staff aren’t just innovators exploring the boundaries of human knowledge, they’re our friends, our neighbors, our family.

Many JPL employees live right here in Pasadena. Some recently lost their homes in the Eaton fire and are now facing the uncertainty of job loss. They are part of the heartbeat of our city, people who frequent our businesses, volunteer in our schools and contribute in countless ways to our community’s life. This news hits hard for all of us.

Thanks to the work of our Workforce Development Board, however, we’ve been able to assist affected employees and will continue doing so. Together with the Verdugo Workforce Board, since JPL is located within their service area, we are working closely with JPL’s Human Resources team to coordinate ongoing support sessions.

Assistance is available both on-site and virtually, and includes unemployment insurance information, career counseling, résumé workshops and job search assistance. Funding is also available to help cover tuition for occupational training programs, as well as work-related needs such as transportation, clothing, tools and technology. In some cases, limited support may be available for relocation or rental assistance.

Every person impacted will receive this information directly and be invited to an orientation. Those seeking help can also visit our workforce center, 1207 E. Green St., or call 626-796-5627.

Please know that Pasadena deeply appreciates the dedication, creativity, and spirit of the men and women of JPL. You’ve always represented the best of who we are, and no matter what challenges come your way, your work and your presence will continue to make Pasadena the Center of the Universe.
