Pedestrian hit and killed by driver in Fremont

FREMONT – A driver hit and killed a pedestrian over the weekend in Fremont, police said.

Around 4:10 p.m. Saturday, officers spotted a vehicle speeding and driving recklessly on Osgood Road, south of Auto Mall Parkway, according to the Fremont Police Department.

Officers tried to stop the driver, but he sped away, police said, adding that officers turned off their emergency lights “in the interest of public safety” and lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the driver ran a red light at the intersection of Osgood Road and South Grimmer Boulevard, collided with another vehicle, lost control and crossed onto the sidewalk, where he hit a pedestrian, police said.

The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau will release his identity after it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

The death marked the city’s sixth traffic fatality of 2025.

The driver – identified as Antwone Spruill, 28, of Fremont – was treated for minor injuries and taken into custody “for several traffic-related violations,” according to police.

The driver of the other vehicle was examined and released at the scene, police said.
