In one of the more viral quotes of the pre-game week, Brooks Koepka boasted that it’s easier to win majors than regular events. Koepka cited the pressure of a major, along with the more difficult course setups in majors.
“Like I said, I think sometimes the majors are the easiest ones to win,” explained Koepka. “Half the people shoot themselves out of it, and mentally I know I can beat most of them, and then from there it’s those guys left, who’s going to play good and who can win.”
It was sort of a passive aggressive critique of the weekly PGA Tour course that are laid out for the players to “live under par.”
Whatever you think of Koepka’s thesis, he seems to be buying into it, as he’s 5-under par through 13 holes, and leads the field by two shots.
Starting on the Bethpage Black’s back-nine, Koepka made two early birdies on Nos. 10 and 13, and then reeled off three gains in a four-hole stretch around the turn (Nos. 18, 1, and 3). The defending champion reached 5-under despite coming away with pars on the Black course’s two par-5s.
