NBA star Russell Westbrook was a slam dunk among participants in his kid camp at Loma Alta Park on Saturday, Aug. 3.
With roots in Los Angeles, the former Laker and Clipper guard, who also played at UCLA in his college years, held camp at Altadena’s revamped Loma Alta Park, months after the Eaton fire scorched the area.
Each year, Westbrook, through his Why Not? Foundation, teaches skills to 100 young people through the two-day intensive camp, held in conjunction with a group of NBA coaches.
The goal is to teach wellness skills and basketball skills, and inspire confidence, as the youngsters from underserved communities get ready for the new school year. The event’s goals connect with the larger mission of inspiring young people to ask themselves “why not?” when approaching goals in life.
