Police shoot, critically injure suspect in a fatal shooting of condo board president in Uptown

The board president of an Uptown condo building was fatally shot Monday night by a man who had been arrested at the building the previous week in a domestic incident, according to police and residents.

The man returned to the building Monday night and shot a 63-year-old man who tried to get him to leave, according to residents. Residents identified the man as the board president.

A resident told the Sun-Times she heard several shots around 8:25 p.m. outside the building in the 4800 block of North Clark Street. She said the man, whose name has not been released, was arguing with the gunman before he opened fire. After the shooting, residents rushed out and attempted to resuscitate the man, who was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“He was a selfless, kind man,” the resident said. “He was stepping up to protect the building.”

Chicago police, patroling in the area, responded to the report of shots fired and arrived at the scene. The gunman fled and officers gave chase, tracking him to the 1400 block of West Argyle Street. When the man “turned and raised his firearm in the direction of officers,” the officers shot him, the police statement said.

Officers rendered aid and the man was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was in critical condition, police said.

A resident said the gunman had been causing problems for several months. She said the suspect and a woman were constantly fighting. The resident said she called police last Wednesday after the man was heard damaging the apartment and throwing objects off the balcony.

The man was arrested and charged with assault and criminal damage to property. Judge Lisette Mojica released him last Thursday after he was served with a protective order, according to court records.

The resident said she “knew” he would return to the building. “I wish he hadn’t been released,” she said. “He should have been stopped.”

Three officers were taken a hospital for observation and are listed in good condition. A gun was recovered on the scene.

The Investigative Response Team is investigating the circumstances of the shootings.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability also is investigating and urged anyone with information to contact them.
