Police shoot, kill chainsaw-wielding man who attacked residents at St. Charles assisted-living home

A man attacking residents of a St. Charles assisted-living facility with a chainsaw was shot to death by police Sunday morning, authorities said.

According to police, officers responded to the River Glen of St. Charles about 8:45 a.m. after witnesses reported a shirtless man using a chainsaw to cut down a tree on the property.

Just before officers arrived, witnesses reported the man had entered the lobby of the facility at 975 N. 5th Ave. and began confronting residents with the chainsaw, police said.

Officers tried to de-escalate the situation and then used a Taser, but the man continued to attack residents and officers, according to police.

An officer then shot the man, police said. The man was pronounced dead at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, authorities said. His name is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
