A pregnant 16-year-old lost her baby and may not walk again after a 17-year-old classmate shot her in her back after harassing her earlier this month in Little Village, Cook County prosecutors said.
Angel David Funez-Reyes, 17, was charged with felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon, according to Chicago police in a statement and a spokesperson for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. Police earlier indicated he was charged as a juvenile.
A judge ordered Funez-Reyes detained while awaiting trial at the Leighton Criminal Court building during a Tuesday hearing.
Prosecutors say Funez-Reyes had been harassing the girl for weeks in a class they shared at school, asking her about gang affiliation.
Funez-Reyes is also alleged to have flashed a gun at the girl and her boyfriend six hours before the shooting, according to prosecutors.
When she and another girl later saw Funez-Reyes around 7 p.m. Sept. 7 in the 2200 block of South Sawyer Avenue, an argument ensued. It was then that she began asking about a gun he had concealed in a hooded sweatshirt, according to prosecutors.
As the pregnant teen turned to walk away, Funez-Reyes allegedly shot her once in her back before fleeing in a black vehicle that was stationed nearby, prosecutors said. The girl was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment.
Prosecutors said the girl likely will not walk again and lost the pregnancy as a result of her injuries.
Funez-Reyes also faces vehicular hijacking charges. Prosecutors indicated he was released from electronic monitoring Aug. 18 and was placed under a 9 p.m. curfew.
Funez-Reyes had been arrested two days before the shooting for aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of ammunition and obstructing identification after he allegedly threatened people with a utility knife while shouting gang-related epithets, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors claimed he lied to police about his identity during the arrest, when two rounds of live ammunition and a knife were found on him. Funez-Reyes will appear in court on those charges Sept. 25.
Funez-Reyes is due back on court Oct. 7 in the shooting of the girl, officials said.
