Prep roundup: Acalanes girls crush University, Bellarmine outduels Monte Vista

LAFAYETTE — Two games into the season, Acalanes already moves like a team in mid-February form.

The Dons offense worked like a symphony as players sliced in for backcuts and hit uncontested 3-pointers. On the other end of the floor, the Dons smothered visiting University-San Francisco, holding the run and gun offense to below 50 points.

In the end, Acalanes cruised to a 72-48 win at home on Tuesday in just its second game of the season.

“Any win at this point is big because we don’t know what we had,” Acalanes coach Margaret Gartner, whose team lost four key starters from last season, said. “It’s fun. It’s exciting. Every game is big for us.”

Senior point guard Lexi Le had 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and a steal. Sofia Fernandez added 19 points and three steals, and freshman Millie Jones had 11 points.

University, coming off a solid win over Sacred Heart Cathedral over the weekend, was led by Anna Beischer, who led all scorers and had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

“It’s definitely good getting our younger players into the groove of the things,” Le said. “University is a great team, great program. We just got to work on getting stronger and being more physical.”

Acalanes didn’t waste any time getting into its groove.

The Dons opened with a 14-2 run, forcing University to call an early timeout. Acalanes’ constant movement led to a barrage of buckets from the paint and beyond the arc.

Le exploded in the second quarter, scoring 11 of her 20 points in the period alone to give Acalanes a 38-19 lead by halftime.

The Lafayette school continued its momentum into the second half and didn’t let University come within striking distance as the Dons cruised to an easy win.

Gartner used every player available to her Tuesday night in the win.

“I think the chemistry will get better,” Gartner said.
