‘Proud to be an NFL alumni brother’ of Charles Tillman

Charles Tillman has my respect and thanks! We are years apart in our NFL careers, but I am awed by the significance of his decision to step away from his FBI career. Identifying, pursuing and then adjusting on the job to a post-NFL career(s) is extremely difficult. I can only imagine the challenges he endured to make his jump from pro football to the epitome of professional law enforcement. I have no doubt that Mr. Tillman will adjust and find a new significant calling. But this is a loss for the FBI and our country.

I hope our many classifications of federal workers, including law enforcement agency workers, find a way to endure the unreasonable, unethical and often illegal behaviors and actions that our current administration is demanding of them. Please help us understand how we might assist you.

Chicago, you have a wonderful man in Charles Tillman. I am proud to be an NFL alumni brother with him.

Showboats

As I looked at the front page of the Sun-Times last Friday Sept. 26, I couldn’t believe what I saw. A U.S. Border Patrol boat cruising down the Chicago River with armed Border Patrol officers in Trump’s latest deportation push on it. Do they think they are as brave as the men who piloted Patrol Boat, River, or PBR boats down the Mekong River in Vietnam in the late ’60s? There is no one along the Chicago River shooting at them. As a Vietnam-era vet I am disgusted with the actions of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol.

Documenting unprecedented times

We all should be grateful for the Sun-Times’ extraordinary photojournalists for their outstanding visual coverage of the historically unprecedented presence of armed federal agents throughout the Chicago area — from the suburb of Broadview to our Chicago River in the heart of the city, and beyond.

The unique shape and format of your excellent newspaper, especially your consistently impressive front covers during the last few days, efficiently allows for the much-needed visual documentation of the unnecessary federal occupation of our beautiful Chicago.

The professional rigor of your photojournalists is making an incredibly rich visual archive of today’s difficult and painful times that will clearly be of benefit to future generations in Chicago, the rest of Illinois, the U.S. and elsewhere.

Congratulations and thank you for your public service to us all during such abnormal American times.

Don’t force me

According to a recent letter to the editor, Illinois legislators are considering a bill that would make voting in Illinois compulsory for citizens eligible to vote.

I am 76 years old and have been a consistent voter for decades. If this bill becomes law, I shall never vote again.

It is my right to vote, and it is my right not to vote.
