REDWOOD CITY – Officers fatally shot a man holding a gun Tuesday afternoon in Redwood City, police said.
In a statement, the Redwood City Police Department said officers were called to the 200 block of Hazel Avenue just after 2:30 p.m. for a report of a man who had fired a gun into the sidewalk.
Officers formed a perimeter and used a drone to find the man. A team of officers equipped with both “lethal and less-lethal options” then tried to make contact with him, police said.
“As officers attempted to communicate with the suspect, he retrieved a firearm from his person and pointed it toward the officers,” police said. “Less lethal and lethal munitions were fired.”
The man was struck by the gunfire, police said, adding that he received medical aid at the scene and was then taken to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Police identified the man as Jose Reynaldo Lombera, 48, of Redwood City. No other injuries were reported.
The officers directly involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, as is customary in such cases, police said.
The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, San Mateo County Coroner’s Office and Redwood City Police Department are conducting a joint investigation into the shooting.
