Republican-Turned-Democrat Running for Governor, “Other Ex-Republicans May Follow”

Geoff Duncan

Conservative political consultant and The Bulwark publisher Sarah Longwell is showing her support for former Republican Georgia Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan, naming the Georgia politician as “one to watch” in the 2026 elections. Duncan, who fought against Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and later endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, is running as a Democrat for Governor of Georgia.

[Note: President Trump has endorsed GOP candidate Burt Jones, who succeeded Duncan as Lt. Governor of Georgia in 2023. Duncan has already taken aim at Jones, as below.]

With a link to a Washington Post op-ed entitled ‘Six Names to Watch as the 2026 Midterm Races Kick Into Gear,’ Longwell wrote on social media: “Let’s build a big, pro-democracy tent!” and added a quote from her take: “If Duncan is able to persuade Democratic voters that he can win the general election, then other excommunicated Republicans may follow.”

[Note: Georgia hasn’t had a Democratic governor since Roy Barnes, who lost his re-election bid in 2003 to Sonny Perdue, who in 2017 became U.S. Secretary of Agriculture during President Trump’s first administration.]

Excommunicated Republicans, in Longwell’s phrasing, comprise the group of prominent non-MAGA conservatives, some censured like former Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, who object to Donald Trump’s agenda and takeover of the GOP.

The Post article Longwell promotes, and which Duncan also shared, is co-authored by six writers who each choose a political figure whose fate in 2026 will shape the nation.

The list includes Republican Maine Senator Susan Collins and Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Nebraska Senate Independent candidate Dan Osborn, Democratic House candidate for Arizona’s 6th district Joanna Mendoza, and Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
