Review: Smashing Pumpkins brings Olivia Rodrigo, Yungblud to Lolla

The Smashing Pumpkins smashed expectations of their Friday finale.

In the tough battle of Billy vs. “Brat,” Chicago’s alt rock heroes held their own and brought in a respectable crowd — and not just people born in the 1900s. Their 17-song set spanned generations, too, drawing on old stalwarts like “1979” and newer material like “Edin.” The band rounded out their performance with a range of Gen X and Gen Z special guests including Olivia Rodrigo on “Thirty-Three,” Yungblud on “Luna” and one-time Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf der Maur for “The Everlasting Gaze.”
