Road rage sparked Edgewater shooting, City Council member says

Charges were pending for a suspect in custody after allegedly shooting a 23-year-old woman during a road rage incident Monday morning in Edgewater, according to police and a City Council member.

The victim, a 23-year-old woman, became embroiled in an argument with another person, only described as male, at 9 a.m. near the the 5700 block of North Broadway, according to Chicago police.

The gunman then opened fire in her direction, hitting her in the upper left shoulder before fleeing, police said. She was taken in serious condition by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, police said.

The alleged shooter was found a short time later and placed into custody, police said.

While police could not say what sparked the shooting, 48th Ward Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth said it appeared to be road-rage related, though she had no more details.

“I’m glad everyone’s alive,” Manaa-Hoppenworth said when reached by a Chicago Sun-Times reporter. “People need to take care of themselves. There’s a lot going on in the world right now” Manaa-Hoppenworth added.

As the shooting unfolded, a police officer told an OEMC dispatcher over police scanner that the woman shot was sitting inside a vehicle, which sustained at least one bullet hole to the driver’s side window and both mirrors were damaged.

Another officer came over the air and told the dispatcher he had made contact with one of the people involved. “She was involved in a traffic crash with our victim,’’ the officer said.

Looks like “multiple vehicles” were involved in that road rage incident, the dispatcher replied.

No charges have been announced.

Area 3 detectives are investigating.
