Officers were called to the area of South First Street and Sutter Street, a residential street in the Washington-Guadalupe neighborhood just south of downtown, about 7:45 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from San Jose police posted on social media. Police said the suspect threatened officers with a knife.

That threat prompted one officer to fire his weapon, and the gunfire hit the suspect, police said.

After being wounded, the suspect barricaded inside the residence, police said. Officers eventually took the person into custody. The person went by ambulance to a hospital.

The police shooting was the fifth involving San Jose officers this year. One of them has been fatal.

Police closed Sutter Street from South First Street to South Almaden Avenue to investigate.
