San Leandro woman dies after four-vehicle crash on Hwy 101

A four-vehicle crash early Sunday morning near East Palo Alto left a 72-year-old San Leandro woman dead and two other people with serious injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities later arrested the man suspected of starting the chain-reaction wreck, which happened around 2 a.m. on Highway 101, just south of University Avenue, the Highway Patrol said in a news release.

An Acura SUV was going north on the highway when authorities suspect it rear-ended a Toyota Rav4. A Subaru SUV then hit the Toyota before slamming into the concrete center median, according to the agency. After that, a BMW sedan collided with one of the wrecked vehicles.

A woman driving the Subaru died at the scene of the crash. She was later identified by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office as Pamela Beran, a 72-year-old resident of San Leandro.

Two people in the Acura were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Officers later arrested the man who was driving the Acura on suspicion of driving under the influence, resulting in injuries to another,  according to the Highway Patrol.
