Santa Cruz man, 78, killed in 3-car crash on Highway 17

A 78-year-old Santa Cruz man was killed Saturday night in a three-car crash on Highway 17 north of Scotts Valley, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported around 9:55 p.m.

The Santa Cruz man had reportedly been stopped in his Honda Element SUV on the east side of the highway at Sugarloaf Road, about 4 miles south of the summit. He then drove into the path of traffic in the northbound lanes.

The SUV struck a northbound Tesla Model Y driven by a 19-year-old man from Antioch. The Tesla was rear-ended by a Honda Accord driven by a 24-year-old man from Daly City.

Drivers who stopped at the scene gave medical treatment to the SUV’s driver before emergency crews arrived, but the man died. His name was not released.

Four other people suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital, the CHP said.

The CHP said Sunday that the cause of the collision was still under investigation.
