Saratoga Rotary unveils peace pole at West Valley College

The Saratoga Rotary Club unveiled a peace pole on Nov. 7 in front of the Cilker School of Art and Design at West Valley College. The handcrafted pole has the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” inscribed in eight different languages on each side. These poles have become international symbols of unity and hope, with more than 250,000 installed in over 180 countries.

Saratoga is getting ready for the holidays. First up is the annual tree lighting in Blaney Plaza, taking place Friday, Nov. 28. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m.

Earlier that same day, children can have their own holiday kick-off with activities and treats at Candy Cane Village, 3-5:30 p.m. at 14460 Big Basin Way.

The popular Holiday Wine Stroll begins immediately after the tree lighting and continues until 9 p.m. Advance tickets can be bought at Eventbrite or at www.saratogachamber.org. Volunteers are needed and welcomed.

A good book is always a great gift, and Friends of the Saratoga Library can help with holiday shopping. From 6-9 p.m. on Nov. 28, the Book-Go-Round on Oak Street is  holding a book sale. A good book is a thoughtful gift, and proceeds benefit the Saratoga Library.

Marie Kerlau of Bijou Pet Photography can make your pet a star. She has created a calendar featuring original photos of some of Saratoga’s furry friends. “I wanted to create a piece of art, from my heart,” Kerlau says. “I had fun photographing local dogs, and their owners were proud to have them included in the calendar.” The 2026 Saratoga Dog Calendar is $35 at www.bijoupetphotography.com. Proceeds benefit the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce.

Great news about our Los Gatos-Saratoga High Union School District: The state Department of Education released the 2025 California School Dashboard, providing schools and families with information on school and district progress in improving student learning and outcomes. The local district earned Blue, the highest possible rating, on every state indicator. This marks the first time the district has reached an all-Blue status. It also makes it the only K-12 or high school district in California to currently have earned a perfect rating across all measures.
