Search efforts for a missing swimmer in Lake Michigan in the north suburbs will continue Sunday morning, officials said.
Highland Park police and fire officials responded about noon Saturday for a report of a distressed swimmer near Openlands Lakeshore Preserve at Fort Sheridan, according to a statement released by the city. The swimmer’s age and gender weren’t immediately known.
A bystander tried to help the swimmer but could not reach them due to a strong current, officials said. A member of the Highland Park Fire Department’s dive team also briefly went missing during the search, but they were soon located.
Highland Park police deployed a drone and several other agencies responded to help with the search, officials said.
About 6 p.m., officials suspended the search, and boat access to the waterfront near Openlands Lakeshore Preserve reopened.
The recovery effort will resume at 8 a.m. Sunday, officials said.
