SeaWorld San Diego drone show to replace fireworks

SeaWorld San Diego will host a nighttime spectacular with 600 aerial drones this summer that will light up the sky over Mission Bay with towering images of breaching whales, pulsating jellyfish and flipping dolphins.

The new “Ocean of Dreams” aerial drone show will kick off on May 22 at the San Diego marine park.

The new drone show celebrating marine life and ocean conservation will feature aerial depictions of sea otters, sharks, dolphins and orcas.

“Ocean of Dreams” will run nightly from May 22 through Aug. 9 and weekends only from Aug. 15 through Sept. 7.

SeaWorld San Diego received approval in mid-April from the California Coastal Commission to test a nighttime drone light show, according to Attractions Magazine.

SeaWorld is expected to begin testing the drone show in May, according to the San Diego City Council.

SeaWorld plans to present 78 drone shows during the yearlong pilot test, according to the Coastal Commission.

The 12-minute shows will feature 600 illuminated drones flying up to 660 feet in the sky.

SeaWorld’s sister park in Orlando, Florida, already hosts a nighttime drone show that features undulating manta rays, paddling sea turtles and hovering octopuses.

The San Diego marine park plans to work with Colorado-based Nova Sky Stories, which has put on drone shows at Coachella, Burning Man, FIFA World Cup, NBA All-Star Game and the Tokyo Olympic Games, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Nova Sky Stories provides aerial drones for the “Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle” projection show in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood.

SeaWorld San Diego, which has featured fireworks shows since 1968, is permitted to host up to 150 pyrotechnic performances per year. The park must conduct at least one fireworks show during the yearlong pilot drone program.

This rendering shows the lower level of SeaWorld’s newly upgraded Shark Encounter, which will reopen in May following an eight-month closure.

SeaWorld will open the refreshed Shark Encounter exhibit on May 22.
