Security guard charged in shooting of teen outside South Loop Jewel

A 29-year-old security guard at Jewel-Osco has been charged in the South Loop shooting this week of a 17-year-old girl who had been reported missing from Minnesota.

Raven Aikins was charged with aggravated battery with a handgun, according to Chicago police. Aikins, of the 8100 block of South Saginaw Avenue, was expected to appear for a detention hearing Friday on the charges.

Aikins allegedly left the scene of the shooting at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Jewel-Osco at 1224 S. Wabash Ave., but she was arrested about 15 minutes later at the Saginaw address, police said.

The shooting wounded a 17-year-old girl who CBS News Chicago reported had gone missing in January from the Minneapolis area.

Aikins and the teen had argued inside the store, according to a Chicago police report. That argument escalated when the teen allegedly threw water at the guard, who then shot the teen with her handgun, according to the report.

The teen was last reported in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Tuesday’s incident marks at least the second time a security guard from that grocery has been accused in a shooting there. A Chicago police report indicated that the suspect in the 2024 shooting, Alandrias Willis, was a security guard at the store. No one was injured in that incident.
