A distinctive era in Tokyo horological history lies at the core of a new lineup of celebratory Seiko timepieces, continuing a series of releases toasting 145 years of watchmaking craftsmanship.
Six of the watchmaker’s most iconic timepieces, from the bold Seiko Prospex to the enduring Seiko 5 Sport, are given a fresh look ahead of the planned October 2026 release for the Edo Purple collection, which the watchmaker notes honors “a color reflecting Tokyo’s heritage.” The shade nods to the former name of Tokyo itself as a traditional Japanese color that lent character to the now-thriving metropolis from 1603 to 1868.
Since the 1881 founding of Seiko in the city’s Ginza district, the horologist notes “the company has grown alongside Japan’s largest metropolis, creating innovative timepieces that reflect the rich culture and aesthetics that Tokyo has cultivated over generations.” To mark the momentous occasion, the watchmaker builds on a series of exclusive creations that kicked off in January with a quartet of stylish new timepieces honoring its history. The Japanese timepiece titans also just partnered with tastemaking Big Apple fashion brand Rowing Blazers on a sporty seasonal collab, while these new anniversary editions take on a more refined character.
The anniversary revival of its flagship models, like a revamped take on the Seiko 5 Sport (priced at $425), echoes a balance between “sportiness and elegance” found elsewhere in the collection. The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer, set to sell for $750 in a limited run of 8,000 watches, uses Edo Purple on both its dial and two-tone bezel, opting to use the new shade on a quarter of the bezel rather than a 50-50 split, making the timepiece even more collectible.
Edo Purple breathes plenty of vibrant life into each of its six unique timepiece designs, with gold accents lending further limited-edition appeal to the lineup. The roster includes a new addition to the refined Presage Cocktail Time series, with the purple dial of the $625 Seiko Presage Cocktail Time “Edo Purple” nodding to the “EdoMurasaki” cocktail first crafted by STAR BAR’s Hisashi Kishi.
Technological innovation isn’t sacrificed in favor of merely a new dial colorway, as the triple-chronograph Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph (priced at $2,900) delivers plentiful form and function via its GPS solar 5X83 movement. Built with a durable titanium case featuring a lightweight-yet-strong titanium and ceramic bezel, the watch is accurate to plus-or-minus 15 seconds a month without a GPS signal. The innovation should further bolster the idea that the watchmaker, as it notes, “continues to take on new challenges while remaining closely connected to people’s lives through time.”
Rounding out the anniversary collection offering is a digital watch that harkens back to its 1982 debut (before being reintroduced in 2025). The Seiko Selection, priced at $595 and known as the ref. HFL001, retools the classic digital watch with elevated and upgraded materials like a stainless steel case and bracelet, rather than the rubber construction typical of most digital watches.
The purple rotary switch nods to its previous functionality in a new limited-edition color, complete with a caseback marked “Limited Edition,” a feature found on each exclusive timepiece. Seek out the upcoming Seiko “Edo Purple” Collection this October at select Seiko retailers across the country.
