SF Giants’ Schmitt has wrist surgery, but expected to be ready for spring training
Giants infielder Casey Schmitt underwent surgery on his left wrist Tuesday, but he’s expected to be recovered, or very close, when spring training opens in February.
Doctors removed Schmitt’s carpal boss — the bony lump on the back of the wrist near the base of the middle or index finger — the team announced Tuesday morning. The team said the procedure typically takes 8-10 weeks of recovery. Giants camp is expected to open the second week of February in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Schmitt, 26, was hit with a pitch on the left wrist during a game against the Miami Marlins on June 25. X-rays and a CAT scan at the time were negative, but Schmidt was placed on the 10-day IL five days later. He returned as the Giants’ everyday second baseman and still hit eight of his career-high 12 home runs over the final three months, but batted just .220 and struck out 54 times in 214 at-bats following the injury.

At the time he got hit, Schmitt had been on a tear filling in at third base while Matt Chapman was injured, batting .333 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 20 games in June.
Overall, Schmitt hit had a slash line of .237/.395/.401 in 95 games, setting career highs in every major statistical category.
Schmitt is expected to head into camp as the Giants’ starting second baseman, although it’s possible this winter the team could add a veteran into the mix that also includes Tyler Fitzgerald, Christian Koss and Brett Wisely.
