SF Giants trade longtime reliever Tyler Rogers to New York Mets

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants‘ longest-tenured pitcher is heading to the East Coast.

Setup man Tyler Rogers is being traded to the New York Mets, according to multiple reports, potentially the first of several moves ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline.

Per multiple reports, the return for Rogers will be right-handers Jose Butto and Blade Tidwell, as well as outfielder Drew Gilbert.

The team has yet to announce the move.

Rogers, 34, has been the most available reliever in all of baseball since he made his debut in 2019. The submariner leads all of baseball with 375 appearances, and he ends his tenure in San Francisco with a 2.79 ERA over 392 games with 142 holds and 19 saves. He’s set to become a free agent this offseason after signing a one-year, $5.25 million deal in his last year of arbitration.

Entering Wednesday, the Giants have lost 11 of their last 13 games and own a .500 record for the first time since the second game of the season. As San Francisco continues to slide in the standings, it’s very possible that more Giants could be on the move between now and 3 p.m. PT on Thursday. Whether the Giants are truly selling or retooling has yet to be determined.

Butto, 27, has pitched over parts of four seasons with the Mets and has a 3.64 ERA this season over 47 innings, while Tidwell and Gilbert are New York’s No. 10 and No. 12 prospects per MLB Pipeline.

Tidwell, 24, made his major-league debut for the Mets and has appeared in four games (two starts), allowing 15 runs over 15 innings.

Gilbert, 24, has spent most of this season with New York’s Triple-A affiliate, posting a .246/.349/.435 slash line with 12 homers over 81 games. He plays all three outfield positions but has spent the most time in center field.

A team source told this news organization that the Giants believe Tidwell can be a legitimate rotation piece. The team also likes Gilbert’s complete package as a player, particularly on the defensive end.

Rogers played his last two season with the Giants alongside his twin brother Taylor, also a reliever, whom the Giants traded to Cincinnati just before the season. Taylor was traded again today, joining the Pirates as the Reds acquired third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.
