Shelter-in-place ordered as Boulder police investigate reports of man with gun near Fairview High

Fairview High School and the Southern Hills Middle School in south Boulder are on lockdown, and a shelter-in-place order is in effect for the neighborhood.

At 10:49 a.m., both schools locked down on the advice of Boulder police, according to a Boulder Valley School District statement. The Boulder Police Department is investigating a report of a man with a gun near the school, according to BPD spokesperson Dionne Waugh.

No police officers have seen the man reported to have a gun, Waugh said. As of 11:27 a.m., police have not found a suspect or confirmed the original report.

A shelter-in-place order went into effect for a half-mile radius around the high school, and drones are being used in the investigation, according to a social media post.

Summit Middle School has also been placed on secure status, meaning students are brought inside and told to remain inside. It is different from a lockdown because it allows classroom activities to continue, according to the BVSD statement.

Boulder police have closed Greenbriar Boulevard between Broadway and Gillaspie Drive, according to a BPD social media post.

BVSD advises that people do not go to either school while the schools are on lockdown.

This is a developing story.
