Can Sevgi Uzun help stop the bleeding? After getting down to eight available players for Sunday’s game, the Sky (7-18) signed the 27-year-old point guard to a rest-of-season contract.
Uzun made her WNBA debut last year with the Wings, starting 19 games and averaging 4.4 points and 3 assists. She began the 2025 season with the Mercury but was waived after seven games.
Uzun won’t solve the team’s injury problems entirely. Leading scorer Ariel Atkins remains out with a leg injury, and both Hailey Van Lith and Michaela Onyenwere are listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game against the Mystics.
But she gives the Sky something they’ve lacked: a real, experienced point guard. The team has the highest turnover rate in the league and has struggled with a stagnant offense since the All-Star break. Rachel Banham has filled in capably, but moving her off the ball could open up more shooting opportunities.
Another positive development: Angel Reese, who missed the last two games with a back injury, is listed as probable for Tuesday.
To make room for Uzun, the Sky waived eight-year veteran Moriah Jefferson. Jefferson was supposed to serve as the team’s back-up point guard, but a leg injury limited her. She appeared in only five games this season.
With the trade deadline approaching Aug. 7, the Sky still have time to make additional moves.
