Snow wreaks havoc on the ground, in the air; over 100 flights canceled at O’Hare

More than 100 flights were canceled and nearly 300 additional flights were delayed after a ground stop was issued at O’Hare Airport due to winter weather Friday morning.

The ground stop was lifted at 9:15 a.m., according to Federal Aviation Administration officials.

At O’Hare as of 6:30 p.m., 135 flights had been canceled and at least 900 more were delayed, according to Flightaware. At Midway, 31 flights had been canceled and at least 100 were delayed.

Average delays at O’Hare were about 30 minutes, and less than 15 minutes at Midway, according to FlyChicago.

It was the second ground stop issued at O’Hare this week after one was put in place by the FAA Monday morning due to slippery conditions.

On and off flurries tonight will end Sat AM, with mostly cloudy skies the rest of the day. A 1-2 hour period of snow is expected as a system passes to our north late Sat night into Sun AM, with some spotty drizzle possible in the afternoon. Slick road conditions continued through much of the day. About 2 inches of snow had fallen in Chicago, and around 2.5 inches in surrounding suburbs, as snowfall tapered Friday evening.

After clearer conditions Saturday, a mix of snow and freezing rain is expected to return Sunday.

Kevin Doom, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, reminded commuters to plan for longer travel times when facing wintry conditions.

“Just take it a little bit slower and use some extra caution,” Doom said.
