A staffer for Illinois Senate President Don Harmon was held at knifepoint and her cell phone was stolen at the senator’s Oak Park office Friday morning, authorities said.
Scott Loeffler, 35, was charged with armed robbery and was ordered detained by a Cook County judge Sunday. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Loeffler was admitted into the office, at 6941 W. North Ave., about 11 a.m. by the employee who believed he was a constituent, according to a statement from the village of Oak Park.
Loeffler, who lives in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood, then allegedly asked about a bill and when the employee had her back turned, he pulled out a knife and took her cell phone, according to the statement. He then asked if she had a wallet and she went to another part of the office seeking help, according to the statement.
A different employee called 911, and the other employee’s husband was able to track the stolen phone. Using the tracking location, police were able to find Loeffler more than an hour later in the 1700 block of Narragansett Avenue in Chicago, about a mile away from Harmon’s office, according to court records.
The employee was unharmed. Loeffler was charged with armed robbery Saturday. The incident did not appear to be politically motivated, according to a statement from Harmon’s spokesperson.
“I want to thank the Oak Park Police Department for a quick response, and I want to thank my staff for their bravery and unwavering commitment to public service,” Harmon said in the statement.
