STEAM Fest drew a crowd of 5,000 to celebrate science, tech, art and math

Los Angeles Unified School District held its STEAM Fest, a celebration of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, that brought together 5,000 students, families and educators. This year’s event on Saturday, April 5, featured participation from 65 San Fernando Valley schools.
At the Discovery Cube Los Angeles located in Sylmar, the district offered interactive exhibits, student showcases and community partner demonstrations “designed to spark curiosity and inspire future innovators,” according to a prepared statement from LAUSD.
During the student showcases, middle school students dissected squids, elementary school students performed in a folklorico dance, a boy tried to test buoyancy using foil and marbles, a high school student demonstrated a robot he had built, and students showed off vegetables they had grown. The activities included fun and creative ways to learn about recycling, robotics, programming and more.

One aim of the STEAM Fest is to create opportunities that prepare students for success in a rapidly evolving and interconnected world, according to LAUSD.
“Our second annual Region North STEAM Fest hosted at the Discovery Cube Los Angeles truly represents excellence, innovation, and demonstrates what it means to be ‘ready for the world,’” said David Baca, superintendent of LAUSD’s Region North.
