Steelers plan to start Justin Fields again in Week 3

To improve their trade compensation, the Bears need quarterback Justin Fields to play at least 51% of the Steelers’ snaps this season.

He’s getting closer by the week.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told reporters Tuesday that the team is planning on sticking with Fields for Week 3 against the Chargers.

“We’re readying ourselves around Justin,” he said. “We’ll stay in that mindset until something happens. Hypotheticals are a waste of time.”

He’s already played every offensive snap in the first two games after being pressed into starting duty when Russell Wilson suffered a calf injury days before the start of the season. Wilson isn’t ready to return.

The Bears traded Fields to the Steelers in March for a sixth-round pick that can become a fourth-rounder if the quarterback plays more than half the snaps for his new team.

The Steelers are 2-0 but are one of four NFL teams, alongside the Bears, who have scored just one offensive touchdown this season.
