Student faces possible charges over social media post that suggested threat at South Side high school.

Charges are pending for a teen girl whose social media post referencing explosives prompted a visit by Chicago police officers to her high school in the Kenwood area Tuesday morning.

At 9:09 a.m., those officers recovered fireworks from the 15-year-old, who allegedly said on social media she had explosives at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory High School, 4445 S. Drexel Blvd., police said.

The school, which has nearly 1,000 students, was later declared clear of explosives, and police later found more unused fireworks, allegedly belonging to the teen, in the 600 block of East 51st Street.

Charges are pending, police said.

In a statement, Brian Kelly, the school’s principal, said the school received a threat on social media and contacted police and the Chicago Public Schools Office of Safety and Security.

“We take all potential threats extremely seriously,” said Kelly. “The investigation is complete, and CPD has deemed the potential threat as non-credible. There is no safety threat to our school, and all of our students and staff members are safe.”
