Sugar the peacock, allegedly hurt by a mail carrier in East Pasadena, ‘showing signs of normalcy’

Two days after it was apparently involved in an intense altercation with a mail carrier in East Pasadena, a white peacock known by some residents as “Sugar” is on the mend.

The peacock underwent X-rays that indicate nothing is broken and there is optimistic about the bird’s recovery, said Kevin McManus, a spokesperson for Pasadena Humane.

“Today, the peacock is doing much better and showing signs of normalcy — eating and walking around,” McManus said on Thursday, Aug. 20. “We’re very excited to report that.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 18, residential security footage shows the peacock following the mail carrier into a driveway. He allegedly hit the bird with an object and later appeared to strike the bird once more in the roadway near the mail truck.

The peacock flopped around on the ground, struggling to stand up, before lying down, still.

Soon after, a resident discovered the peacock in the street and Pasadena Humane picked it up and began medical care.

Pasadena Humane’s animal control is continuing to investigate the incident.
