Chicago police fatally shot a 50-year-old man who fired shots at them Thursday after a vehicle pursuit ended in a crash in Northwest Indiana, police said.
Officers responded to a call of a person with a gun about 5:50 p.m. in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue, where they spotted Joseph Navarro, 50, who was also wanted for aggravated battery, get into a car and flee the area, said Chicago police and the Lake County, Indiana, coroner’s office.
Navarro allegedly led officers on a chase until he crashed his car just across the state border in the 100 block of Gostlin Avenue in Gary, police said.
Navarro allegedly fired shots at Chicago police officers, prompting officers to return fire, hitting Navarro multiple times, police said. He was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana, where he was pronounced dead at 6:44 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.
An autopsy Friday determined Navarro, of the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue, died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, the coroner’s office said.
Two officers were taken to a nearby hospital for observation, police said.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said.
The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, per department policy. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was investigating.
