A person was shot and taken from a Chino Hills home, put in the trunk of a car and shot again by one of two suspects on Wednesday night, July 29 — in front of San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies who had pulled over the sedan, authorities said.
Then, at least one deputy fatally shot that suspect while the second complied with commands and was arrested, authorities said.
It was unclear when the victim died, if the suspects knew that person, or if the suspects were burglars.
Deputies initially responded to a call about shots heard on the 2000 block of Monteverde Street in Chino Hills just after 10 p.m., San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokesperson Gloria Orejel said.
That is roughly where authorities say a person was shot outside of their home and put into the trunk of the car.
Deputies heard someone calling for help and tried to do a traffic stop on the suspects’ vehicle, but the driver led deputies on a pursuit, Orejel said.
About a mile away, in a normally quiet neighborhood, in the 2400 block of Wandering Ridge Drive, the car pulled over, and deputies ordered the two occupants out.
The passenger complied, but the driver went around to the trunk of the car, she said, opened it and fired a shot into it.
At least one deputy fired at that suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
A tarp was placed over the suspect’s body to the side of the street, while the victim’s body also remained in the car until investigators could finish their work.
The second suspect was taken into custody and not injured, Orejel said.
Whether the passenger had a weapon was unclear, she said.
“There’s still a lot to be learned,” Orejel said, adding she would provide more information soon.
