A suspected drunken driver was arrested last week on investigation of vehicular homicide in a fatal Lakewood crash, police said.
Lakewood police responded to the fatal two-car crash at Kipling Parkway and W. Sixth Avenue Frontage Road just before 4:50 a.m. on Nov. 30, according to the department.
People were ejected from both cars involved in the crash, police said. It’s unclear how many people were injured in the crash.
One woman, a passenger in the car that was hit, died from her injuries several days later at the hospital. She will be identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Ella Cromwell, the 20-year-old woman driving the at-fault car, was arrested later that day on suspicion of vehicular assault, reckless driving, DUI and being a minor in possession of alcohol, police said. The charges under investigation were updated to include vehicular homicide after the victim died.
The Lakewood Police Department did not immediately respond to questions about why the crash and arrest were announced nine days after the incident.
Investigators believe speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash.
Less than a week later, 15 student athletes and coaches from Grand Junction were injured in a crash involving their school bus near the same Lakewood intersection.
Both crashes remain under investigation.
This is a developing story and may be updated.
