SWAT team crisis negotiators talk East Bay resident into surrender

MARTINEZ — A crisis negotiation team talked a man into surrendering after he barricaded himself inside a residence, police said.

It all happened after the U.S. Secret Service arrived to serve a federal arrest warrant in the 100 block of Macalvey Drive about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a statement from Martinez police Capt. Patrick Salamid.

The SWAT team out of central Contra Costa County arrived to help the federal agents serve the warrant, Salamid said. The person in the house for whom the warrant was intended then barricaded himself in the house and stayed there as SWAT members encouraged him to come out.

A member of the team’s crisis negotiation unit eventually made contact with the man and successfully convinced him to surrender.

Police closed the 100 block of Macalvey to vehicle traffic and issued a shelter-in-place for the other residents via its emergency alert system. The road serves as a traffic connection from Alhambra Avenue to Morello Avenue.

No other information on the incident was available, and Salamid referred inquiries to the U.S. Secret Service. Matthew Young, a spokesperson for the Secret Service said that by policy, the agent does not confirm or comment on criminal investigations.
