Haunted Harbor Halloween

Torrance author Carrie Carroll, winner of the 2025 Storytrade Award for Children’s Fiction (ages up to 7), reads her book “Tommy Tuttle’s Thanksgiving Adventure” during storytime at Granny’s, 635 Monterey Blvd., in Hermosa Beach, at 2 p.m. Carroll’s book has been praised for its imaginative storytelling, vibrant illustrations, and timely message about the importance of family and gratitude. South Bay New Deal Bus Tour

Hermosa Beach Museum presents the South Bay New Deal Bus Tour at the Clark Building, 861 Valley Drive, at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Beginning in 1935, the Works Progress Administration combatted Great Depression-era unemployment by hiring millions of Americans to build public infrastructure and produce art. The schools, libraries, post offices and murals that they produced featured art and architecture influenced by the Art Deco and Social Realism movements. This bus tour explores the numerous WPA sites throughout the South Bay, including impressive architecture and the largest petrachrome mural in the world: “The History of Transportation” in Inglewood. Adult Bereavement Support Group

Taking Time: South Bay and Rolling Hills United Methodist Church, 26438 Crenshaw Blvd., are partnering to offer a non-denominational eight-week grief support group to adult members of the community who have experienced a death. The group meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays until Jan. 8 (no meeting on Nov. 27, Dec. 18 and 25, and Jan. 1). The cost is $100 per person. Information: 424-634-1956 or info@takingtime.org.

Dementia Caregiver Support Group

Join Beach Cities Health District’s care managers Joy Schmidt and Rudy Diaz, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, for a Dementia Caregiver Support Group in the cafe at 514 N. Prospect Ave., in Redondo Beach, at 2 p.m. every third Monday of the month. Information: bchd.org/support-groups.

Dia De Los Muertos Community Altar

El Segundo Public Library, 111 W. Mariposa Ave., presents a Community Altar in celebration of the two-day holiday Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Nov. 1-2. The altar will be open during library hours until Nov. 4. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of those being honored. The community is invited to contribute photos and messages to honor and remember their loved ones who have passed. Information: 310-524-2728.

Food and Mood Sharing Circle

Cancer Support Community South Bay, 2601 Airport Drive, Suite 100, in Torrance, offers a free workshop led by instructor Lily Hanna. Designed for adults, participants will be provided a space to learn, exchange ideas, and connect. Each month features a different discussion topic geared toward food and mood categories. Manhattan Beach Community Choir

The Manhattan Beach Community Church Choir is starting up again, and rehearsals will take place at Manhattan Beach Community Church, located at 303 S. Peck Ave., from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays. Mindfulness Class for Kids

Volunteers and Students

South Bay Literacy Council offers free tutoring in English as a second language and in literacy for English speakers. Committed volunteers provide tutoring at various convenient South Bay locations and online, in classroom settings and one-on-one. The tutors are trained. Little Fish Theatre

Classics at Old Town

Vintage movies, music on a historic Wurlitzer pipe organ and old-fashioned sing-alongs can be enjoyed at the Old Town Music Hall, 140 Richmond St., in El Segundo. This weekend’s features will be Cartoon Jamboree: Oscar Winning Animation at 2:30 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1,  and “The Big Parade” (1925-silent) with organ accompaniment at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2. Art films in the South Bay

The South Bay Film Society offers art-house features in the AMC Rolling Hills theater, 2591 Airport Drive, Torrance. Films often sell out ahead of time.
