Teenager dies after Marin Headlands cliff fall

A 17-year-old San Rafael boy died after falling from a cliff in the Marin Headlands, officials said.

Aaron Baten Gramajo was a student at San Rafael High School, where he was heading into his senior year, according to Joe Ryan Dominguez, the school principal.

“Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this extremely difficult time,” Dominguez wrote in a community message. “Aaron grew up here in San Rafael, and his loss deeply affects so many, especially those in the Laurel Dell, Davidson and SRHS community who he and his family are closely connected with.”

The incident happened Monday in the Kirby Cove area, which includes steep slopes to the ocean just west of the Golden Gate Bridge. Investigators have determined that he accidentally slipped from a cliff edge, said Roger Fielding, the county’s chief deputy coroner.

The Marin Headlands are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The National Park Service did not respond to an inquiry for additional details.

San Rafael High School offered counseling services at the campus this week. The first day of school is on Wednesday.
