Passengers face travel mayhem on the UK’s busiest railway route after a trackside fire broke out.

Part of the West Coast Main Line between Euston and Rugby has been blocked after a fire today.

People travelling on Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services were warned to expect major disruption until the end of the day after the incident near Rugby.

National Rail said: ‘A fire next to the track at Rugby means the northbound lines are blocked. Trains running through this station may be cancelled, delayed by up to 70 minutes or revised.

‘Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.’

Passengers caught in the havoc took to social media to ask when trains would move northbound again.

One passenger in Tring, Hertfordshire, said: ‘We’ve been stationary at Tring station for well over an hour, why are there trains on other lines in both directions moving?’

Advice for Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway passengers

Avanti warned customers that trains passing through Rugby and Milton Keykens might be delayed, diverted or cancelled.
