Training exercise fuels active shooter fears at College of San Mateo

SAN MATEO – A surprise law enforcement training exercise at the College of San Mateo fueled fears of an active shooter late Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Armed individuals and screams were reported between 5:15 and 5:20 p.m. around Building 12, the College of San Mateo and San Mateo Police Department said in advisories.

The San Mateo County Community College District Public Safety Department and San Mateo Police Department dispatched officers to the scene. They arrived to discover outside law enforcement agencies were conducting a training exercise with the college’s emergency medical technician program, according to authorities.

“Appropriate notifications had not been made and our agency was not made aware of outside agencies using the campus for training,” San Mateo police said.

“While glad to learn this was not an active threat, our department responded in force and took appropriate actions immediately,” the agency continued. “We train for these responses regularly and our community should feel we are prepared to respond.”

No injuries were reported.

Police did not identify the law enforcement agencies that were involved in the training exercise.
