Democrats dominated the first major Election Day in the US since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

Democrats on Tuesday won governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, the only states electing new chief executives this year.

They also swept a trio of state Supreme Court contests in swing-state Pennsylvania and ballots measures from Colorado to Maine.

And Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, won the New York mayoral election in a landslide.

Trump wasted no time in making his thoughts on the matter known, taking to Truth Social and calling for changes to the electoral system.

He wrote: ‘Pass Voter Reform, Voter ID, No Mail-In Ballots. Save our Supreme Court from “Packing,” No Two State addition, etc. TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER!!!’

What is the filibuster?

The filibuster is a part of government where senators can block action by the majority party if they have a group of 41 senators who want to prevent the legislation.

Trump wants to abolish this so he can reopen the government, which has been shut for an almost record amount of time.

What voter reforms does Donald Trump want?

Trump has previously urged an end to absentee and mail-in voting, along with requiring voters to have an ID.

This was the first election since his return to the presidency, and voters rejected candidates and causes aligned with his Republican Party from Virginia and Pennsylvania to Maine and New Jersey.

Fearing a bad night, Trump tried to distance himself from the election results, but still posted about why he thought Republicans lost.

‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ he said.

Trump also took aim at voting laws in California, writing: ‘The Unconstitutional Redistricting Vote in California is a GIANT SCAM in that the entire process, in particular the Voting itself, is RIGGED.

‘All “Mail-In” Ballots, where the Republicans in that State are “Shut Out,” is under very serious legal and criminal review. STAY TUNED!’

The election results have upset other Republicans as well, leading to one Fox News host admitting he was ‘in tears’.

Mamdani has already ruffled the feathers of the Republican party, who aren’t too happy that a Democratic Socialist – or as they refer to him, a ‘communist’, has been elected mayor.

The mayor-elect gave a speech shortly after the results dropped and, with his signature smile, told supporters: ‘As Eugene Debs once said, I can see the dawn of a better day for humanity.’

‘The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate.

‘I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this.’
