Trump’s Energy Secretary Said He Was “Unaware” U.S. Was “Taking Millions of Barrels of Oil Out of Iran Every Night”

Chris Wright

In the Oval Office on Wednesday President Trump told members of the press that the cost of gas will “come down like a rock” once the conflict in Iran is over.

[NOTE: Trump at first used the term war, but changed it to conflict, acknowledging a recommendation from staff that he use a different word. “Todd said please call it a conflict,” the President said.]

He added, “We’re taking out millions, which I’m announcing today for the first time, but we’ve been taking out millions of barrels of oil, millions of barrels, every night, took out oil, but now I’m gonna tell you because they just figured it out. So now that they figured it out, I can tell you. It was very hard for me.”

He smiled and said, “I wanted to say it so badly, but I didn’t want to ruin it. It was very hard,” which caused those standing around him to laugh.

U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (D-OH) brought up Trump’s comments when she questioned Energy Secretary Chris Wright, asking: “Are you aware that the US was taking millions of barrels of gasoline from Iran in the Strait of Hormuz?”

Wright replied: “We are preventing the flow of Iranian oil through the Strait of Hormuz.” When Sykes said “that is not the question I just asked you,” Wright answered, “I’m just not sure ‘taking’ is the right word, we’re preventing the flow of it.”

Sykes then played audio of Trump speaking in the Oval Office and said to Wright, “Mr. Secretary, it seems like you didn’t know about this either, so why would the United States being taking out millions of barrels of oil from Iran?”

Wright replied: “It’s essential that we prevent oil sales from generating revenue for Iran to spend to develop nuclear weapons and oppress their people.”

Accusing Wright of dodging her question, Sykes asked again: “Did you know that the United States was taking millions of gallons [sic] of oil from Iran?”

Wright replied, “I’m unaware.”

Sykes then asked Wright if he thought the President is lying. Wright answered: “I do not think the President is lying. I think the President is talking casually about our efforts to stop the flow of Iranian oil.”

Asked whether it was appropriate for Trump to speak “casually” about war, Wright said “you talk in different styles” and that he didn’t “have any serious objection to what he said.”

Wright said Trump “speaks in different styles for different audiences” and insisted that the President “takes this war deadly serious.”
