Trump’s Proposal to Cut Low Income Heating Program Is “Evil,” Says Congressman

Rep Jim McGovern

President Trump’s proposed 2027 annual budget is being criticized for boosting defense spending to $1.5 trillion while eliminating domestic programs including the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a program that helps about 6 million low-income households heat and cool their homes.

[NOTE: Listed as a community service at the Office of the Administration for Children & Families website under the Department of Health and Human Services headed by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., LIHEAP says it “helps keep families safe and healthy through initiatives that assist families with energy costs.”]

U.S. Representative Jim McGovern (D-MA) responded: “We spend $4 Billion each year on this program—which helps low-income families & seniors heat their homes. Trump has already spent 10x that much on his Iran War…and now he has the audacity to say we don’t have enough to give heat to Americans in need?! Evil.”

During a private event at the White House on Wednesday, President Trump said: “We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of daycare.” He added, “It’s not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, Medicare — all these individual things.” He said, “They can do it on a state basis. You can’t do it on a federal [basis].”

Trump’s proposed budget highlights his administration’s priorities, but it’s Congress that handles federal spending issues. Ranking Member on the House Budget Committee, Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA), said, “This budget represents ‘America Last.’” As seen below, he referred to Trump’s budget as “DEAD. ON. ARRIVAL.”
