HAYWARD — Two people were in critical condition Thursday after explosions rocked a Hayward home authorities say was possibly being used to manufacture illegal fireworks.
A house fire was reported just before 12:20 p.m. in the 27000 block of Mandarin Avenue, according to the Hayward Police Department. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from injuries “consistent with a fireworks-related explosion,” police said.
A second blast occurred while officers were at the scene, leading to the evacuation of the home and surrounding area. Firefighters quickly contained the resulting fire to the garage.
Several people were evaluated at the scene, and two were taken to area hospitals for further medical treatment, according to police. Both were listed in critical condition.
The Alameda County explosive ordinance disposal unit was called to the scene to remove any remaining explosive materials.
Police said it appeared as though fireworks or explosives were being manufactured at the home. An investigation is underway to determine the origin of the fireworks and cause of the explosions.
