Update: Wind advisory in place for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area until 1 a.m. Monday — winds gusting up to 55 mph

An updated wind advisory was released by the National Weather Service on Sunday at 8:37 p.m. in effect until Monday Oct. 27, at 1 a.m. for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area.

The NWS Reno NV says to be ready for, “Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph and wave heights 2 to 5 feet on Lake Tahoe. Sierra ridge gusts up to 100 mph.”

“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve,” the NWS said. “Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, holiday decorations, and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage. Consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.”

Understanding high wind alerts

When it comes to high wind alerts, staying informed is essential. The NWS categorizes high wind alerts into three levels, each signifying a different degree of risk:

High wind warning: Take action!

Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheel and slow down.

Wind advisory: Take action!

Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong as to warrant a High wind warning. Objects that are outdoors should be secured and caution should be taken if driving.

High wind watch: Be prepared!

Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose outdoor items and adjust plans as necessary so you’re not caught outside.
