Swiss luxury watchmaker Urwerk is unveiling UR-120 Blue Planet, marking the third and final iteration of its signature satellite hour edition, and it’s betting that Star Trek fans will “live long and prosper” if they purchase the collectible timepiece.
Limited to just 20 pieces, the new model rocks a deep blue vibe that’s accented by functional gold components, drawing clear inspiration from both space exploration and the classic sci-fi TV and movie franchise. The watch features a distinct two-part case construction consisting of a sandblasted steel upper shell and a sandblasted titanium base. The interlocking structure eliminates visible seams and screws on the upper surface. Articulated lugs, including a concealed spring within the 6 o’clock lug, are integrated into the design to improve wrist ergonomics.
At the core of the UR-120 Blue Planet is the self-winding Calibre UR-20.01, which operates at a frequency of 4 Hz and provides a 48-hour power reserve. The movement utilizes a triple planetary gear system to display dragging satellite hours alongside an analog minute track. As each hour satellite reaches the left side of the display, its two rectangular arms split apart to form a V-shape resembling a Star Trek-style Vulcan salute that Mr. Spock might appreciate.
The watch’s intricate carousel system consists of 175 individual components, with interactions calibrated to the micron level. Maltese crosses and custom lyre-shaped springs, produced entirely in-house, coordinate the precise counter-rotation of the satellites to maintain maximum legibility.
Urwerk finished the lyre springs and Maltese crosses with a 24-karat yellow-gold PVD coating. The gold elements contrast against the blue atomic layer deposition treatment applied to the base movement materials, which include beryllium copper, anodized aluminum, ARCAP, and titanium.
The watch is secured to the wrist by a blue Cordura-textured calfskin strap featuring a satin-brushed steel pin buckle with a blue PVD finish. According to the brand, this represents the final production run for the UR-120 series, with no future variant of the style planned for release.
The Urwerk UR-120 Blue Planet is limited to 20 pieces globally and is available now for $156,000.
