A water gun fight at a New York City park during a heatwave turned into a real gun fight that left a teenage boy dead.

Darrell Harris, 17, told his mother he was going to Starlight Park in the Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx for the water gun fight on Tuesday.

He got squirted repeatedly and told the participant to stop – at which point the suspect took out a real gun and shot him in the head and arm around 8pm, according to the New York Police Department.

The suspect fled, and Harris was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Harris’ mother, Kelli Lewis, 48, said her son had promised to be back home by 9pm and did not leave the house often.

‘That is the most shocking part of it because he is not really outside,’ Lewis told the New York Post on Wednesday.

‘The one time he does ask to go outside and this transpires.’
