Waymo gets permission to expand robotaxi service to East Bay, North Bay, Sacramento

Waymo has received approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to expand its driverless robot-taxi service to the East Bay, North Bay, and Sacramento, the company said Friday.

The permission allows the Google-spinoff company, owned by Google parent Alphabet, to offer robotaxi service across the entire Bay Area, northward to Cloverdale, and eastward to Sacramento.

“We’re looking forward to opening our service to more Californians,” Waymo said in a press release.

A spokesman for the Mountain View company said he could not specify when service might roll out in the expanded area, saying Waymo wants to “serve more of the region in the future, and this is an important next step.”

Earlier this month, Waymo began offering driverless robotaxi service on Peninsula freeways, and to and from Mineta San Jose International Airport. That expansion also included serving much of the Peninsula, and part of San Jose.

The company in September received a pilot permit to start operating at San Francisco International Airport.
