Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has donated $250,000 to a super PAC supporting former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s mayoral race.
Ackman’s contribution to the pro-Cuomo PAC “Fix the City, Inc.” was disclosed in campaign filings and brings its total fundraising to more than $4.9 million in about six weeks. Cuomo has recently received $100,000 from philanthropist and Walmart Inc. heiress Alice Walton, $250,000 from media magnate Barry Diller and $100,000 from fashion designer Michael Kors.
Ackman, a long-time donor to Democrats, has in recent years become a leading cheerleader for Republican President Donald Trump, backing him on foreign policy, tariffs and combating antisemitism. He also hosted a fundraiser in January for another mayoral candidate Whitney Tilson, who once ran hedge fund Kase Capital Management and sits on the advisory board of Ackman’s Pershing Square Foundation.
“We don’t want NYC to become San Francisco or G-d forbid Los Angeles and Whitney can help save us,” Ackman said in a post on X at the time.
Cuomo’s entry into the mayoral race in late February shook up the field — he’s currently polling in first place, while most surveys show Tilson near the bottom of those vying for the Democratic nomination for mayor in the June 24 contest.
In a Quinnipiac poll conducted last month, Cuomo received support from 31% of voters, compared with just 11% who said they would back incumbent Mayor Eric Adams. Adams has since announced he will not run in the Democratic primary, and will seek reelection on a third party line in the November general election.
Cuomo has drawn support from wealthy individuals including Ken Langone, Anthony Scaramucci and Marc Lasry, who see Cuomo as a practical chief executive focused on public safety. Cuomo was elected governor to three terms before resigning in August 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment, which he has denied.
